The Story

Since my university does a year-round system, my breaks are somewhat off-set from most colleges. Right now, I’m on a little two-week break before my last quarter. However, my little sister just got on her own summer break a few weeks prior and is staying in my family’s main guest bedroom, putting me in the secondary bedroom: The Presidential Suite. Wow, that sounds so fancy, you may say. My current abode got this name due to the giant framed picture of good ol’ Abe himself staring at me every night from across the way, and George Washington guarding me just above my head. I really don’t mind it, especially because I can say I’m staying in The Presidential Suite and that makes me feel really special. My mother has also added some “presidential” books to the shelf in here that really bring the theme together, such as “All the Presidents’ Children,” “Lincoln,” and “Lincoln on Leadership.”

She also added a little sign on top of these books that says, “Be the change you wish to see in the world,” which is somewhat ironic because that quote is from Gandhi, but I digress. I felt like it was a great quote to add to this room that embodies American history. I’ve struggled to find patriotism in my country at times. When I lived in Europe in high school it felt taboo, and now with everything that has happened in the past couple years most people either complain or joke about America, but I think it’s good to take a step back and remember where we’ve come.

And when better than right before we celebrate Independence Day? Before you grab your sparklers and burgers, go remind yourself why we celebrate on July 4th every year… and maybe crochet these coasters too, wink wink.

Size

Finished coaster is approximately 5” in diameter.

Pattern

This coaster is crocheted using colorwork, which is sometimes called tapestry crochet. It is done by carrying the other yarn through as you crochet, which allows for an easy switch when you get to that color. If you are unfamiliar with this, Google and YouTube are great resources, and Crochet 365 Knit Too has a great blog post about it here!
